چکیده
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Voice disorders, such as unilateral vocal fold paralysis or paresis, and vocal fold scarring feature structural asymmetries of the vocal folds. Studies on how structural asymmetries affect voice has mostly been limited to computational simulations and experiments on mechanical models. The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of asymmetries in left-right position, height, and length of the vocal folds on the intraglottal flow characteristics, as well as acoustics in the canine larynx model. STUDY DESIGN Basic science. METHODS Measurements of intraglottal flow velocity fields were taken in excised canine larynges using particle image velocimetry. Asymmetries of the vocal folds are induced by translating the vocal processes in space using a prong apparatus connected to a micrometer. RESULTS Asymmetries in length height and abduction produced a reduction in the intraglottal vortices strength and subsequently the glottal efficiency. CONCLUSION Current findings can affect future recommendations for surgical interventions that are used to treat unilateral vocal fold paralysis. The occurrence of the Coanda effect in pulsatile flow through static models of the human vocal folds.
Pulsatile flow through a one-sided diffuser and static divergent vocal-fold models is investigated to ascertain the relevance of viscous-driven flow asymmetries in the larynx. The models were 7.5 times real size, and the flow was scaled to match Reynolds and Strouhal numbers, as well as the translaryngeal pressure drop. The Reynolds number varied from 0-2000, for flow oscillation frequencies co...
متن کاملSteady Flow Through Modeled Glottal Constriction
The airflow in the modeled glottal constriction was simulated by the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow, and the corresponding Reynolds equations for turbulent flow in generalized, nonorthogonal coordinates using a numerical method. A two-dimensional model of laryngeal flow is considered and aerodynamic properties are calculated for both laminar and turbulent steady flows...
متن کاملRegulation of glottal closure and airflow in a three-dimensional phonation model: implications for vocal intensity control.
Maintaining a small glottal opening across a large range of voice conditions is critical to normal voice production. This study investigated the effectiveness of vocal fold approximation and stiffening in regulating glottal opening and airflow during phonation, using a three-dimensional numerical model of phonation. The results showed that with increasing subglottal pressure the vocal folds wer...
متن کاملParameterization of Articulatory Movements Based on Cascaded First-order Systems and its Application
By applying tension asymmetries in a finite-element model of vocal fold vibration, a variety of modes of phonation were simulated. The biophysical model incorporated tissue mechanics, glottal aerodynamics, and acoustics of the vocal tract. For simplicity and speed, glottal aerodynamics were modeled with a modified Bernoulli equation. Vocal tract acoustics were modeled using a wave reflection an...
متن کاملSimulation of 3d larynges with asymmetric distribution of viscoelastic properties in their vocal folds
Here 3D larynx models whose viscoelastic properties of the superficial tissues of the true vocal folds were altered in specific regions at the glottis producing different left-right fold asymmetries are analyzed. The idea is to initiate studies about the dynamic of larynges under possible pathological conditions. All simulations used a strategy based on the finite element method to solve a flui...
